Dike & Son triumphs with three successes at Retail Industry Awards 2024

Dike & Son, the renowned independent superstore in Stalbridge, Dorset, has solidified its position as a standout in the retail sector by claiming three prestigious titles at the Retail Industry Awards 2024.

The family-run store, with a passion for community-focused retailing, walked away with the Independent Retailer of the Year – over 6,000 sq.ft., Chilled Retailer of the Year – Independent, and Drinks Retailer of the Year – Independent awards.

As a one-off superstore, Dike & Son impressed the judges with its expanded range, spotless store standards, and unwavering commitment to supporting local producers.

Its recent investments in energy-efficient chillers, EV charge points, and the installation of additional solar panels exemplify the store's dedication to sustainability.

The introduction of a new 'picnic' aisle, featuring cooked meats, pies, and quiches, alongside an expanded range of Dike’s Kitchen homemade salads and desserts, further demonstrated the retailer’s ability to adapt to customer demands for healthier, convenient options.

Judges were particularly taken with the store’s immaculate presentation. “I can’t get over just how good the merchandising was, and how well-faced the store was. It’s absolutely impeccable,” commented one judge.

The Chilled Retailer of the Year – Independent award recognised the installation of new chillers with automatic night-time light shut-offs and the store's continued focus on reducing its environmental impact.

With the addition of more solar panels, Dike & Son was able to cut electricity usage by 15,000kwh in April 2024 compared to the same month in 2023.

Their efforts to introduce new product lines such as Kimchi and Kefir, and partnerships with four new local suppliers, including fresh fish and seafood providers, were also praised by the judges.

Dike & Son’s win for Drinks Retailer of the Year – Independent was attributed to its strong relationships with suppliers, resulting in great deals and a huge selection of beers, wines, and spirits.

In-store tastings and cross-merchandising, such as chilled wine at the deli counter and chilled Peroni with pizza promotions, contributed to increased sales.

Their recent launch of a gifting website featuring drink hampers and bespoke gifts has proven successful, with plans to expand nationally through a mail-order option.

Adam Vincent, Director of Dike & Son, said: "To win one award at the Retail Industry Awards is amazing so to win three awards is just unbelievable! We are very proud of the team we have here although It wouldn’t of been possible without all of our Suppliers help and support and of course our fantastic customers.

"Not only does this give the whole team a welcome boost in moral but will also help us appeal to new customers as a result of winning such a prestigious award.

"Thanks to all involved in making the IRN awards what they are today."

Katie Secretan, Nisa’s Director of Sales and Retail congratulated the store: “Dike & Son’s achievements are truly remarkable. Their dedication to sustainability, innovation, and community support makes them a shining example of independent retailing at its best. Congratulations on these well-deserved awards!”
